Aug. 2, 1872
Dear Sir,
In reply to your letter of the 27th of July I hereby agree to the terms therein contained, viz. –
That you supply for Tinsleys’ Magazine a novel to run for about twelve months, and to consist of about twenty pages of the Magazine each month.
I am to have the right to publish a three-volume edition of the story for twelve months from the date of its appearance in that form, after which all rights revert to you.
[Page 3]The whole of the copy is to be delivered to me in time to enable me to publish the novel three months before its completion in the Magazine.
In consideration thereof I am to pay you the sum of £200, at the rate of £15 per month within a fortnight or thereabouts of the issue of each number of the Magazine — the balance, £20, to be paid within a month after the publication of the three-volume edition.
Should the success of the novel exceed my anticipations I agree to make you a fair additional allowance.
Yours truly
Envelope
