Thomas Hardy Esq,

Max Gate,

Dorchester.

Dear Mr Hardy,

It is in contradiction to the spirit of our arrangements to bind you to a date, but we venture to express the strong hope we have that the manuscript of your short story will reach us in July.

Perhaps now that you have finished "The Woodlanders" you may feel free to undertake another novel of similar length and at liberty to arrange with us in regard to its publication.

We shall have pleasure in paying you One Thousand Guineas for the exclusive serial rights (to include, however, the usual American Sources) of a story averaging the length of your usual three volume novel.

Yours faithfully,

Tillotson & Son
