September 19. ^th^ 1878
My dear Sir
I am sorry that I have not sooner been able to write to you about your novel "The Return of the Native".
I shall be happy to publish an edition of one thousand copies, and to pay you two hundred pounds (£200) on publication, provided you can arrange for the appearance of the work in a separate form at least one month before it's completion in the Magazine. In the event of there being a demand for further editions I would pay you £75 (seventy five pounds) for every 250 copies printed by us.
Believe me My dear Sir
Yours very faithfully
George Smith
Thomas Hardy Esq.
