Dorset County Museum

Dorchester

Sir,

On behalf of the Council of Dorset County Museum, I beg to thank you for your valuable gift of your original M.S. of "The Mayor of Casterbridge" which will be submitted to the Council for acceptance at the next meeting.

I remain,

Yours faithfully,

John E. Acland
Curator.
Dear Mr Hardy

Your gift is even better than I expected, if I may [Page 2] say so, and will be very greatly valued, & safely preserved.

I am looking forward with much pleasure to the play tomorrow night.

I have found out from Rev. W. Miles Barnes, that all the poets M. S. were disposed of after the time of his death.

Yrs very truly

John E. Acland
